The post Where Feeling Finds A Voice: Communication As A Key To Boost Student Well-Being appeared first on Ĵý – American Academy.

Stressed about maintaining a high GPA? Overwhelmed by heavy schoolwork or trying to balance school, personal interests, and relationships? Ĵý-AA’s counselors are here to help, listen, and understand. Whether you need a safe space to talk or support in making sense of difficult emotions, you are always welcome in Room 405. Simply stop by and knock on our counselors’ door—they will take the time to support you, help you work through your challenges, and care for your well-being by navigating those emotional “burdens.”

Why should we care about student well-being?

Challenges and pressure are part of the journey of growing up, and it is important for students to learn how to manage them. Without healthy ways to cope, pressure can quietly build up and have a significant impact on students’ mental well-being.

Why? Because stress doesn’t affect only emotions, it can lower academic performance, weaken memory, reduce focus, and increase anxiety. If a student left it unaddressed, it would contribute to more severe mental health issues over time. So what is the key to managing it effectively? Communication.

The Power of Communication: A “Secret Superpower”

Communications carry far more value than just exchanging words. It benefits how we think and behave with others. There are numerous hidden benefits that not everyone knows:

  • Relieving stress: Communication helps release long-held tension and clears up misunderstandings, boosting well-being.
  • Resolving conflicts effectively: Open conversation allows students to express our feelings and perspectives, helping them to truly understand others as well as providing a chance to express our true feelings.
  • Building better relationships: Communication is key to reconciling, rebuilding trust, and deepening connections, minimizing conflicts and misunderstanding between students.

Keeping Students Balanced: How Ĵý-AA Helps?

At Ĵý-AA, student well-being always comes first. Thus, the counselors always design diverse approaches to check in with students and support their mental health. Communication is always our priority to help us approach students and help them eliminate their stress. Even just a few minutes of sharing can make a real change, helping students quickly overcome and manage their pressures.

After meeting with our counselors, students consistently feel lighter, supported, and more capable of handling challenges. These ongoing connections help ensure every student continues to feel supported, valued and empower them to grow both personally and academically.

Voices of Ĵý-AA Counselors: Student Well-Being is our First Priority

Ms. Khuê, a Student Counselor at Ĵý-AA who supports students in navigating stress and challenges, shared her insights on promoting student well-being: “It’s really important not only for humans to communicate effectively, but also to help identify your feelings, understand them, and know what to do next. Students usually come to my room to figure out their true feelings at the time, and it really helps when we reflect together and get them out.

We have designed lots of approaches to help students manage stress; actually, we could do so much more. This year, my goal is to generalize the population. For example, I always remind students to prioritize their mental health by organizing the “Be Well Station”. In particular, it has 10 stations, each of which offers different activities to help build connection, gratitude, and reflection. Sometimes, kids have been there to earn house points, but it’s OK too, because the main point was to get them involved in the activity. We did the bulletin board as well to boost engagement and participation. That’s how we build community!

Besides that, Mr. Rob, who is a counselor of our students, also wants to share his points about student well being in Ĵý-AA with the hope of spreading awareness

Mr. Rob Wilson – High School Counselor, Director of Student Service and Designated Safeguarding Lead

The first and most important thing is listening. Good communication always starts with truly listening to students – understanding what they need, how they’re feeling, and giving them your full attention. I also try to be very open and direct by asking questions like why they came to see me, what’s causing their stress, and what kind of support they’re looking for. As a counselor, sometimes students just want someone to listen, and other times they want help finding a solution. I don’t like to make assumptions, so I always ask what they need from me and how I can best support them.

However, there are various reasons why some students may not yet feel ready to seek counseling or share their concerns with us. They may still feel shy or hesitant and not sufficiently comfortable expressing themselves. Some may feel that their problem isn’t serious enough, or they worry they’re making too big a deal out of it. Others might be afraid that sharing something personal could get them into trouble. Sometimes, students simply feel unsure or uncomfortable because they don’t know the counselor well yet, which can make them hesitant to open u.”

For this reason, Ĵý-AA fosters a supportive and caring environment where students feel safe and confident to share their thoughts and express their emotions whenever they need. With the dedicated guidance of our school counselling team, students’ mental wellbeing needs are thoughtfully heard, supported in a timely manner, and guided through positive and healthy coping strategies. By nurturing trust and understanding, the school empowers each student to navigate challenges with resilience and to grow with confidence throughout their personal and learning journey.

The AP courses are widely recognized and highly valued by:

    • 100% U.S. top colleges and universities

The AP Diploma is a valuable addition to a student’s portfolio and seen by universities as a powerful indicator of a student’s motivation and potential for success at university.

Thousands of high schools in over 100 countries worldwide offer AP courses. AP offers students a range of exceptional advantages that help them confidently shape their academic pathways and future ambitions.

Every student’s journey at Ĵý–AA begins with exploration. Within a community that values both independence and collaboration, students are encouraged to uncover what drives them and to pursue their goals with confidence and purpose. These early experiences lay the foundation for inspiring alumni stories that reflect the school’s belief in empowering lifelong learners.

For Tracy Vo (Class of 2021), that spark first appeared in Grade 12, when she launched her own baking business. What began as a simple passion project soon became an opportunity for her to learn about leadership, community, and purpose, values that would continue to guide her long after graduation.

From Ĵý – AA to making a meaningful impact

This early experience shaped her belief that meaningful work begins with purpose, and what started as a personal project became a lesson in leadership, entrepreneurship, and community spirit. With encouragement from her teachers at Ĵý – AA, Tracy learned what it means to bring joy and connection through her work, a foundation that would later become a remarkable alumni success story.

Tracy Vo, Class of 2021 at Ĵý – AA

Now pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Business and Commerce at Macquarie University, following her earlier studies at RMIT Vietnam, Tracy continues to blend her academic learning with her passion for innovation. She also shared that she plans to transfer to a Bachelor of Cyber Security program at AIBI next year, further expanding her skill set and future career opportunities. As a participant in the Tech Ready Women Academy’s Female Founder Startup Program and now the Founder and CEO of her own non-profit, she is turning her ideas into action, proving that purpose-driven education can lead to impact far beyond the classroom.

Alumni success begins with passion

Today, Tracy is the Founder and CEO of ChangCuti, a social enterprise that began with a mission to rescue cats and has evolved into a movement that connects mental health, technology, and community. She describes herself as “part philanthropist, part chaos coordinator, and a full-time believer that doing good should look good too.”

Through ChangCuti, Tracy leads her own nonprofit initiative, managing a global network of 30 volunteers dedicated to humanitarian causes. Whether rescuing animals, supporting mental health, or mobilising youth for social impact, Tracy continues to pave her own way with purpose, turning empathy into action and inspiring others to do the same. Tracy has transformed her personal challenges into a platform for positive impact. Her organisation helps students and young professionals find purpose through volunteering and humanitarian projects on a platform that makes helping others both accessible and innovative.

Tracy at ROBOROCK’s House of Tomorrow

Tracy’s impact extends beyond Australia. She joined the Tech Ready Women Program to explore how she can contribute to tech, and independently advocates for international students at Macquarie University, helping launch the “Jobs Open to International Students” section in the career mailing list. She was also selected as an Ambassador for the Institute for Economics and Peace, a United Nations partner, promoting equity and inclusion.

At Ĵý-AA, sports play an integral role in shaping well-rounded learners. Beyond physical fitness, they nurture discipline, collaboration, and confidence, qualities that extend far beyond the field or court. Through a vibrant range of sports programs and activities, our students learn to challenge themselves and pursue excellence with spirit and integrity.

Where Learning Meets the Playing Field

Engaging in sports supports students not only physically, but also academically. Regular physical activity has been proven to improve concentration, memory, and brain function, all of which support academic performance. On the playing field, students naturally develop skills that mirror those needed in the classroom, such as setting goals, staying disciplined, and thinking strategically. Whether it’s learning a new skill or striving for a personal best, students discover the satisfaction of growth through hard work.

The Social Power of Sports

Sports are powerful teachers of teamwork and character. On every team, students learn how to communicate clearly, trust one another, and work together towards a shared goal. Victories are celebrated together, and setbacks become opportunities to grow as a group.

Through sports, Ĵý-AA students also experience the importance of fair play and respect. Win or lose, they learn to celebrate effort, support their peers, and persevere through challenges. These lessons shape not only better teammates, but well-rounded individuals who carry the same cooperative and responsible mindset into the classroom and into life beyond school.

Nurturing holistic growth through Sports at Ĵý-AA

Our teachers ensure that every student, regardless of ability, has a chance to participate and succeed. This inclusive philosophy helps students discover their own strengths, fostering confidence and motivation through positive experiences in sport.

Ĵý-AA also offers competitive opportunities through local and international events such as SISAC (Saigon International Schools Athletic Conference) and ASAC (Asian Schools Activities Conference). These platforms allow students to represent their school, demonstrate sportsmanship, and experience the excitement of competition at a higher level.

Experience Sport Spirit at Ĵý-AA

Every sports experience at Ĵý-AA is a journey of holistic growth. Whether they are competing in international tournaments, engaging in daily physical education, or simply enjoying an afternoon match with friends, every student at Ĵý-AA is encouraged to find joy in movement, purpose in teamwork, and pride in personal growth. At the heart of it all, we hope that each student leaves the field not just stronger, but inspired and ready to carry the lessons of sports into every aspect of their lives! Ĵý – American Academy (Ĵý-AA) is not merely a school that provides knowledge, but also a place that nurtures our Sun Bears’ character, compassion, and sense of social responsibility. We believe that while learning is essential, it is not enough on its own to achieve holistic development. Thus, character and leadership development through charity is one of meaningful ways to help students germinate the seeds of good character.

Ĵý-AA collaborates with other charity organizations

How is character and leadership development through charity important to students?

Involvement in charity plays a crucial role in shaping students’ character and promoting holistic growth. Through their participation in the annual charity initiatives at Ĵý-AA, students are given the opportunity to:

  • Developing leadership skills
  • Enhancing problem-solving skills
  • Building responsibility
  • Developing moral values and character
  • Promoting compassion and empathy

Forming one’s character at an early stage helps students become successful, responsible, and contributing members of society. By promoting character education through charity, our Sun Bears not only dedicate their time and effort to raise funds and awareness, but also experience true joy and the meaning of giving back. From that, students cultivate good compassion and a strong sense of responsibility – essential traits for building character and leadership. Recognizing the profound impact of charity on students’ holistic development, Ĵý–AA regularly collaborates with reputable organizations such as Anh Chi Em, VinaCapital, and others to nurture students’ character through meaningful community service initiatives.

Annual Charity activities at Ĵý-AA

Following previous successes, Ĵý-AA continues to collaborate with charitable partners to organize a series of meaningful initiatives to address various social issues.

Among the most notable is the fundraising campaign supporting communities in need of clean water through the “Clean Water” and “Walkathon” projects. These initiatives aim to raise 100 million VND, which will go toward building clean water wells in Tra Bong, Quang Ngai, improving daily living conditions, and creating long-lasting, sustainable impact for residents.

Another highlight is the “Can Clover” project, organized in collaboration with the VinaCapital Foundation, to support children battling cancer. Through dedicated fundraising efforts, Ĵý-AA successfully raised 25 million VND with the heartfelt participation of students and parents. Beyond the monetary value, the true spirit of the project lies in its compassion and unity. With deep empathy, the Ĵý-AA community came together to surpass the goal of folding 1,600 paper cranes – symbols of love, hope, and encouragement for the young patients’ courage and optimism in their fight against cancer. This touching gesture beautifully embodies the kindness and solidarity of our Sun Bears.

In addition, the school also took part in other charitable activities such as the “Housing” project, which raises funds to help rebuild and repair homes in disaster-affected areas. During the Mid-Autumn Festival 2025, representatives of Ĵý-AA and the Sun Bear community also visited Binh Chanh Hospital (Children’s Hospital) to deliver gift bags and mooncakes to young patients – sharing warmth, joy, and festive spirit with the children.

Building on the success and meaningful values of past charitable projects, Ĵý-AA also plans to organize additional charity events in the future to promote students’ character and leadership development through charity. Upcoming initiatives include the “Walkathon” program for the Anh Chi Em foundation in December, and the “Tet Charity Bazaar”.

How do charitable activities benefit students?

Through these meaningful charitable initiatives, Ĵý-AA strongly believes that character and leadership development through charity plays a vital role in shaping students’ awareness and compassion. Our Sun Bears truly enjoyed the joyful moments of sharing and helping others, while realizing the powerful impact that even a small act of kindness can create. These are not merely school activities, but meaningful community endeavors that contribute to making society a better place for everyone.

Indeed, sharing is caring – at Ĵý, every act of giving helps shape both a better student and a better community!

When the final bell rings, most students gather their belongings and head home, marking the end of another school day. However, in some classrooms, the lights remain on. It’s not difficult to spot dedicated teachers quietly at work in the calm, peaceful spaces. They lead afterschool programs, guide students through assignments, or simply stay to offer extra help and encouragement.

Because learning doesn’t ‘end’ with the bell!

For many teachers, supporting students after school is not an extra duty but a natural expression of their commitment as educators. Through the Ĵý – AA afterschool activities program, they dedicate additional time to guide students who need extra help or enrichment beyond regular class hours.

Some students join to strengthen specific skills or prepare for upcoming assessments, while others simply appreciate a calm and supportive space to review lessons at their own pace. Teachers stay to listen, to explain one more time, and to remind students that growth takes persistence. Their presence after hours, both through the structured afterschool program and informal support, reflects a quiet dedication that helps every learner feel seen, encouraged, and capable of reaching their goals.

Afterschool Activities Program at Ĵý–AA

The Afterschool Activities Program at Ĵý-AA provides a wide range of opportunities designed to meet different student needs. The program features an exciting mix of sports, creative activities such as pottery, student-led clubs, and open-access sessions where students can explore their interests, develop new skills, and enjoy learning in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Teachers lead these sessions not only to strengthen knowledge but also to help students develop life skills such as time management, collaboration, and independence. The environment is relaxed yet purposeful, allowing students to engage in meaningful learning while building confidence in their abilities.

At Ĵý – American Academy (Ĵý–AA), success is not only defined by the achievements of our students and teachers but also by the unwavering support of our parents. Our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) represents the voice of all parents and serves as a bridge that strengthens connections between families and the school.

The Ĵý–AA Parent-Teacher Association was established as part of the school’s mission to strengthen collaboration between home and school. It provides opportunities for parents to engage in meaningful conversation, exchange parenting knowledge, and better understand the educational journey of their children. By fostering this partnership, the PTA helps create an involved and connected parent community that supports every child’s success.

What the PTA Has Contributed

Throughout the school years, the PTA has been actively participating in bonding events that enhance engagement and strengthen relationships within the school – from Coffee Talks connecting school leaders and parents, staff appreciation gatherings on Vietnamese Teachers’ Day, and activities for students on traditional festivals like the Moon Festival and Tet.

Beyond the Sun Bear community, our PTA has also shown compassion for a wider community. Through fundraising initiatives such as donation drives and charity fairs, they’ve helped raise funds for essential causes – from building clean water wells to supporting families in need.

Our shared goal: Positive, Caring, & Engaged

By gathering in the large PTA community, parents can be more open to seeking parenting advice from each other and from the school. With the support of others in the community, every parent can support their child both physically and mentally, encouraging students to move forward with their developmental journey.

At Ĵý–AA, collaboration is at the heart of our community. The PTA provides a meaningful platform for parents to share perspectives, bring forward ideas, and partner with the school in shaping shared goals. This spirit of partnership ensures that every idea has a place and every effort makes a difference.

Stay Engaged through PTA Events

The spirit of collaboration continues to thrive as our PTA prepares for upcoming activities. In November, they will host an Art Workshop designed to explore creativity, engage with each other, and aim for the charity’s purpose.

Creativity in every corner of Ĵý-AA

At Ĵý-AA, creativity takes many forms and fills every corner of our campus. Walking up the stairs, through the hallways, and inside classrooms, you will notice a collection of Ĵý-AA student’s artwork created over the years, proudly carrying the name of its ‘young artist’. Each artwork tells a story of imagination, curiosity, and growth, turning the school into a ‘constant living gallery’ that celebrates the creative spirit of every student.

Whispering a story through the artwork

All art displayed at our campus reflects not only our students’ creativity, but represents their voices, ideas, and perspectives. Through art, they express how they see the world and discover the confidence to share it. This process nurtures self-awareness and pride, shaping confident individuals who aren’t afraid to share their view of the world. By reflecting on their own creative choices, students learn to think independently while developing their own viewpoints and the confidence to express them thoughtfully.

At Ĵý-AA, we nurture creativity through a diverse range of Art Classes, including Pottery, Visual Art, and 2D Art. Our programs allow students to explore different mediums as each nurtures not only artistic ability, but also essential life skills; perseverance, focus, and problem-solving. The artworks displayed throughout the campus are a result of these explorations.

On 26 September, Ĵý-AA celebrated “Global Be Well Day” (GBWD) – a special event for all Sun Bears to recharge and reflect on the true meaning of being healthy. This event not only encouraged physical activities but also offered a chance for students to reconnect with themselves and others.

What is Global Be Well Day?

Global Be Well Day” (GBWD) is an annual event celebrated across all schools within the Cognita community worldwide, including Ĵý-AA. Recognizing that students often focus on building knowledge and physical strength while overlooking the importance of mental wellbeing, GBWD is held each year to inspire and reinforce awareness of the need for balance between body and mind. To achieve holistic development, students are encouraged to care for both their physical and mental wellbeing – learning to maintain emotional balance, healthy routines, and mindful daily habits.

“Global Be Well Day” at Ĵý-AA

During the recent Global Be Well Day (GBWD), Ĵý-AA students took part in a variety of engaging and meaningful activities. A highlight of the event was a sharing session on how to build a healthy sleep routine – helping students learn to plan their rest time wisely and ensure sufficient, quality sleep each day. This activity helps us realize that sleeping is the easiest and most powerful way to boost our health and mood.

Besides, the students also explored the food pyramid by identifying which foods belong to each category (carbohydrates, protein, fat, and more). It might sound easy at first, but some foods really surprised us! Through fun interactive games, we easily gain more interesting facts about nutrition and learn how to build balanced meals.

Then came one of the most creative moments of the day: pillow-making! We crafted our own mini pillows by knotting fabric together — a calm, mindful activity that symbolizes rest, relaxation, and care for ourselves.

At the end of the day, we ended up with energizing outdoor games such as capturing the “SunBear”, tic-tac-toe, and rock-paper-scissors on massage mats to enhance our physical health.

“Global Be Well Day” – More than just a day of fun

Global Be Well Day (GBWD) is more than just an opportunity for students to relax and create joyful memories with their friends and teachers. It also offers all Ĵý-AA students valuable lessons on how to refresh their energy and maintain their balance in daily lives. By applying what they learned – from sleep and nutrition to relaxation and exercise, it is hoped that students can turn healthy habits into part of our everyday routines.

Instead of beginning her journey with ready-made answers, Nguyễn Trần Uyên Khang chose to “go slow”—taking time to experiment, explore her interests, and discover what truly inspires her. This thoughtful approach helped her build a strong, authentic profile that was accepted by nearly all the U.S. universities she applied to.

A student at the International School of Ho Chi Minh City – American Academy (Ĵý–AA), Khang has recently completed the university application process with outstanding results. She earned admission offers from prestigious institutions such as Purdue University, University of Maryland (ranked top 4 in Information Science nationwide), University of Washington Seattle, several highly regarded University of California campuses (UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis), as well as Penn State, Rutgers, Ohio State, Michigan State, and many others.

What makes her journey unique is that Khang didn’t start out with a single favorite subject or a clear career dream. She admits: “I once felt pressured, as if I was moving slower than others.”

However, instead of rushing to force herself to find an immediate answer, Khang chose to listen to herself through each experience—from conversations with teachers, seeking advice from her family, to trying out new activities. The open learning environment at Ĵý–AA, where students are encouraged to voice their own perspectives and grow in their own way, created the conditions for her to confidently explore and better understand herself.

Instead of rushing, she chose quality over quantity in extracurriculars. She joined ESTV, an education project promoting sustainable tourism, where she worked on campaign ideas, communications content, and student engagement activities. She also contributed to ƯƠM—a fundraising program in collaboration with social organizations to support primary students in northern Vietnam. During the summer, she volunteered as an SAT tutor on the global learning platform Schoolhouse.world.

“Each time I joined an activity, I asked myself: What did I learn here? What did it help me understand about myself?” Khang reflects. This selective yet steady approach helped her naturally shape her passions.

Not only in social activities, but Khang’s academic journey also reflects a strong spirit of taking on challenges. Mr. Zach, her History teacher, encouraged her to try AP World History in the Advanced Placement (AP) program, even though she had never studied the subject in depth before. This became the foundation for her to continue challenging herself with other advanced courses in the AP curriculum. Thanks to the structured AP teaching methods and the dedicated, highly experienced faculty at Ĵý–AA, Khang was able to successfully complete her AP courses.

In addition, Mr. Ryan, her Computer Science teacher, recognized Khang’s potential in the field and encouraged her to pursue it further. At the same time, her older brother, an Ĵý–AA alumnus now studying International Relations abroad, also inspired her with his research and broadened her social perspectives. The support and motivation from both her teachers and family gave Khang the confidence to better understand her own interests and abilities, allowing her to develop along her own unique path.

After her journey of exploration, Khang realized that she was drawn to both psychology and technology. When she discovered the field of Information Science—particularly the research area of Human-Computer Interaction—she understood that she no longer had to choose between what once seemed like two separate passions. Information Science became the perfect intersection, allowing her to create technology experiences that are more accessible, effective, and human-centered.

It was Khang’s clarity of purpose, along with her consistent academic identity, that helped her gain acceptance from numerous prestigious universities in the United States. What matters most, however, is that Khang knows exactly where she is heading and why. After her undergraduate studies, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in UX Research and hopes to return to Vietnam to contribute to the country’s technological development—promoting greater equity in user experiences across Asia compared to the West.

Looking back, what Khang is most proud of is not only her university admissions results, but also the way she has grown—step by step—from a student who “didn’t know what she truly liked” into a young person who understands herself and knows the value she wants to create for society. For Khang, maturity does not come from having ready-made answers, but from the very journey of seeking those answers with perseverance, courage, and the confidence of youth.
