Bao Anh, a student at Ĵý International School – American Academy (Ĵý-AA), has drawn a three-year journey filled with effort and perseverance to overcome fears, opening the gate to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) – one of the most prestigious universities in the United States – to gradually realize her dream of becoming a director.

Born into a family with a mother who worked in film production, Do Bao Anh was exposed to the film set early on. Instead of choosing to become an actor, after practical experiences during her studies, Bao Anh was attracted to the role of director, the person who decides on the camera angles and lighting to fully express the emotions and storyline of a film.

“Since 10th grade, in a school film project about climate change at school, when I had to take on the roles of director, screenwriter, and set designer… I realized that I loved the work of someone behind the camera. I participated in a summer program at UCLA to experience the learning environment there, and that was when I confirmed my direction,” Bao Anh shared.

Realizing the importance of the AP (Advanced Placement) program when preparing for the American dream – the cradle of the film and entertainment industry – Bao Anh proactively transferred to study at Ĵý-AA, the leading international school in Ho Chi Minh City that teaches this program systematically and diversely with a team of experienced and highly specialized teachers.

Here, Bao Anh set her sights on achieving the AP Diploma, a prestigious certification awarded by the College Board to students who excel in AP courses. With determination and focus, she became one of the first students in Vietnam to be on the list of candidates to receive the AP Diploma. .

However, Bao Anh knows that for UCLA, a school in the top 20 best universities in the US, scores or degrees are not the only deciding factors. Instead, it is the diverse personal experiences from academics to social activities, clear direction and true passion that will make the difference.

The process of pursuing advanced classes, working as an assistant at a career counseling office, participating in Model United Nations, being an MC, organizing events… sometimes makes Bao Anh feel overwhelmed. But instead of avoiding it, she learned to accept the pressure as an inevitable part of growing up. The valuable thing is that, even when she is most stressed, Bao Anh still maintains a positive spirit and always ensures that she completes all assigned tasks in a thorough and responsible manner.

Bao Anh is quite fond of the line “Fear is the mind-killer” in her favorite movie Dune because “Everyone has fear, and so do I. But if I let fear stop me, I will never have the chance to grow up. I choose to act even though I am still afraid, because only when I move forward, the door can open.” Bao Anh affirms that it is the practical experiences, from leading a Home Team with many students in the school to helping friends orient their future… that have helped her develop both her skills and independent thinking.

According to Ms. Nguyen Phuoc Bich Thao, University & Career Counselor at Ĵý-AA, Bao Anh is not only an excellent student in academics but also an emotional and courageous soul. ” She is a true “Sun Bear”: shining with positive energy, sincere care and a spirit of constant dedication. I see In you there is a loving heart, a strong will, even in the most difficult times .

For Bao Anh, the guiding principle in her journey of learning and growing up is to understand what she wants and courageously pursue it. “I don’t think we need to know everything from the beginning. But if there is something that really interests me, I will go all the way. For me, learning is to understand myself, not to become a copy of someone else .”

Sharing more about herself in the next 5-10 years, Bao Anh hopes to become a film director or producer, contributing to the Vietnamese film industry. The female student confided with much enthusiasm: “I hope I can create opportunities for the young generation of filmmakers, and contribute to bringing positive films that inspire audiences .”

For Bao Anh, UCLA is an important stop on the long journey to conquer the dream of cinema. With all her determination, creative curiosity, and passion for art , the young girl is gradually preparing for a professional path ahead, where she conveys positive values through each film. Not choosing an easy path , but her journey is worthwhile and inspiring.

International School of Ho Chi Minh City – American Academy (Ĵý-AA) is the leading international high school in Ho Chi Minh City for students aged 11 to 18, achieving prestigious accreditation from the Association of International Schools (CIS) and the Council of International Schools and Colleges in the United States (NEASC). Ĵý-AA is proud to be a member of Cognita schools, a group of leading international schools in Vietnam and aroundthe world. With outstanding strengths in the AP program and currently an international school in Ho Chi Minh City teaching and granting AP Diplomas, nearly 2 decades old, a team of experienced teachers with nearly 75% having a Master’s degree or higher, Ĵý-AA is a place to nurture passion, develop personal capacity and pave the way for the journey to the future with a rate of 100% of graduates being admitted to the top 3 university wishes, including prestigious universities around the world.

At Ĵý-American Academy (Ĵý-AA), every student will undertake a rigorous and balanced American curriculum that will help them gain access to a higher education at university or college. In addition our teaching methods importantly aim to develop the life skills needed for every child to achieve success not only in education but beyond.

We strongly believe in the assessment process to provide the insightful feedback needed to produce good teaching practices and learning experiences for our students. Our assessment program plays an important part in the process of grading a child in both academic and non-academic subjects throughout each school year.

Ĵý-AA Assessment System

Diagnostic Assessment

Ĵý-AA students begin each learning unit with a diagnostic assessment to measure their skills and existing knowledge of the subject in hand. The findings of these assessments allow the teacher to provide suitable support and to tailor their instruction accordingly.

Assessment for Learning (Formative Assessment)

Formative assessments provide feedback to children and parents about how each student’s learning is progressing and are presented in the form of comments, checks and number grades. These sessions will also prepare our students for their following summative assessment.

Assessment of Learning (Summative Assessment)

Summative assessments are used to measure a student against the different learning objectives of a course or subject. The final grade for each class is mainly based on the summative assessment.

Teachers record both formative and summative feedback in the form of grades and comments in PowerSchool and we encourage students and their parents to use this tool as part of their learning process.

Ĵý-American Academy Grading System & Credits

Grading Scale & Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculation

At Ĵý-AA we use number grades from 0 to 100 and calculate both weighted and unweighted GPA. The main difference is that weighted GPAs take into account the difficulty of a student’s coursework and unweighted GPAs do not.

It is important to note that although GPA is important, a college will look at the whole picture when evaluating an application, including an individual’s determination and perseverance when undertaking coursework.

Most adults today will clearly recall either their parents telling them to go outside to play, or being reluctantly enlisted on a family walk, out in the fresh air, to the country or seaside. These are acts of parenting that customarily get passed on down the generations, as we all generally know that being outside and amongst nature is essentially a good thing for us to do.

In today’s world, where kids are relentlessly surrounded by ever advancing technology, taking time to be outside of the house is even more important than ever. Children need time away from the screens of their mobiles and computers, and they will benefit from time not spent engrossed in social media or lost within the graphic landscape of a PC game.

Being outside and being active is good for your child’s physical and mental health, and for their general well being. A natural environment gives children the perfect setting to be able to play and interact with their peers, and on top of the fun, outdoor activities are also extremely beneficial for a child’s learning.

“The powerful combination of a diversity of play experiences and direct contact with nature has direct benefits for children’s physical, mental and emotional health. Free play opportunities in natural settings offer possibilities for restoration, and hence, well-being.”

Ĵý-American Academy Outdoor Education Field Studies Program

As illustrated in the Ĵý-AA prospectus and featured on the Field Trip page of our Student & Parent Central platform, at Ĵý-American Academy we are proud of the Outdoor Education Field Studies Program. have shown that outdoor education that involves nature can boost a child’s performance at school, and we also firmly believe that outdoor activities are essential to the overall well being of a child.

The Ĵý-American Academy Field Studies Program incorporates multiple day field trips across Vietnam and Southeast Asia, which work in tandem with the school’s curriculum, and provides opportunities for students to work on innovative projects and gain leadership experience. Our Outdoor Education program grows students in the following ways:

  • Independence and resilience
  • Self confidence
  • Understanding of the natural environment
  • Character development
  • Leadership and teamwork skills

Using the Positive Education learning model, the program endorses our commitment to developing every aspect of a child as they build confidence and inspire students to get involved in their local community. The expeditions teach children to apply knowledge learnt in school to real life situations and participants learn decision making skills, how to work in a team environment, and a greater cultural understanding of the world around them.

As a part of the Cognita Schools Group, Ĵý-AA is on a mission to deliver impactful Outdoor Education experiences to students. We have expert staff in the field of Outdoor Education planning and facilitating the trips, and international standard risk management practices to ensure the trips are safe and fun.

have shown that outdoor education that involves nature can boost a child’s performance at school, and we also firmly believe that outdoor activities are essential to the overall well being of a child.

“Where Character is Built”

Students often tell us that Outdoor Education Field Students experiences are the most memorable and important times they’ve had at Ĵý-AA.

My most memorable moment about the field trip is when I went rock climbing. First I was very scared that I would fall because I am afraid of heights. But when I reached the top after many times wanting to give up, I realized that I can do everything. (Grade 7 student, 2019 to Cat Tien & Madagui)

The focus of the trips vary from school year to school year and include working with schools in the Mekong Delta, explorations to study geological features on the Vietnamese coastline, and community projects to help clean up areas around Hoi An port.

Ĵý-AA Field Studies Program are beneficial as they:

  • strengthen relationships
  • enhance awareness of culture, society and history
  • build valuable outdoor and physical fitness skills
  • encourage students to take risks and ne more confident in their ability to succeed

Visit the Field Program picture gallery to view a fantastic showcase of past field trips that include:

an historical excursion to Angkor Wat in Cambodia to learn about ancient and modern civilizations & a jungle trek to the third largest cave in the world in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Outdoor activities are important for children because they:

  • have a positive factor in a child’s development
  • are good for physical and mental health
  • connect children with nature
  • help a child appreciate natural surroundings
  • provide essential practical experience for life
  • improve general behaviour
  • are great fun

Visible Learning is a book written by John Hattie, published in 2008, that was once dubbed ‘the Holy Grail of teaching’ by the international publication: Times Educational Supplement (). In the groundbreaking study the author detailed a range of influences that have both a positive and negative impact on learning. His findings have strongly influenced the way teachers now approach general teaching practices.

In essence, Visible Learning challenges every teacher to become the evaluator of their own teaching methods. Hattie believes that when a teacher can see learning through the eyes of their students, they will then help their students to become their own teachers and thus achieve greater success.

For the book and subsequent updates, John Hattie studied seven areas that contribute to learning: student, home, school, classroom, curricula, teacher, teaching & learning approaches. In his original study he ranked 138 influences that are related to learning outcomes, using a scale that included extreme positive effects to very negative effects.

According to Hattie’s research, learning is significantly improved when teachers work together effectively, activate their student’s prior knowledge on a topic, and create opportunities for students to collaborate and learn from one another. Interestingly, practices like tracking or ranking, homework, modifications to the timetable and one to one laptops did not show as significant an impact on student learning.

However Visible Learning does not only provide a list of the relative effects that have different influences on a student’s achievement, it shows that the key to making a difference was making teaching and learning visible. Visible Learning have surmised that Hattie’s findings ask teachers to consider ‘What works best?’ in teaching rather than ‘What works?’.

It is widely accepted that teachers who work closely with a child to find out how they feel about what they are learning, and who challenge students and provide sound feedback, will achieve greater success.

Hattie has now detailed 252 influences and effect sizes related to student achievement, which can be viewed here at the

“When teaching and learning are visible, there is a greater likelihood of students reaching higher levels of achievement”. – John Hattie

John Hattie is now professor of education and director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne.

Visible Learning at Ĵý-American Academy – statement

Instruction at Ĵý-AA is driven by our core understanding that students learn best through active, differentiated and collaborative processes. Teachers at Ĵý-AA use a range of methods based on the learning objectives and the needs of the students to focus on developing student understanding. As much as possible, teachers differentiate and personalize instruction so that students find the appropriate level of challenge and support as well as opportunities to capitalize on their personal strengths and interests.

Our teaching staff explicitly teach metacognitive strategies to help students describe how they approached a problem, and they often put more emphasis on a student’s explanation, than on whether or not they got the correct answer.

The unpleasant act of bullying is a vindictive behaviour that can lead to a victim suffering physical or emotional abuse that might affect them for many years. At Ĵý-American Academy, we take incidents of bullying extremely seriously and have therefore implemented a thoughtful and thorough process for dealing with this issue.

Bullying is an action undertaken by an individual or group to cause hurt to another person or group of people. The behavior will normally be repeated on a regular basis and it can occur in many ways and situations including physical harassment on the school campus and cyberbullying via the internet.

Types of bullying:

  • Physical: pushing, punching, or hitting
  • Verbal: name-calling or threats
  • Psychological and emotional: spreading rumors or excluding someone from social interactions

Unfortunately the internet has made it easier for bullies to be cruel and in the case of cyberbullying, they can virtually follow their victims home and attack them during evenings and the weekend. There is less respite from harassment for school children being bullied today as their tormentors can also reach them via messaging apps and social media.

Possible signs of bullying in a child:

  • feigning illness
  • extreme stress and anxiety
  • being quick to anger
  • a reluctance to go to school

What you as a parent can do to help

Parents should speak to their children about the issue of bullying, how they can deal with it if it happens to them, and what they should do afterwards if it does.

  • Always encourage your child to tell you if they ever feel worried or frightened by someone else’s behavior, either at school or online – tell your child they are not alone!
  • Be sure you have knowledge of every area of your children’s activity online
  • Teach your child to react calmly to aggressive people and avoid confrontation, and to not interact with bullies on online platforms
  • Remind your child constantly about all the positive attributes that they have, to counteract any negativity from others – build their confidence at all times!
  • Always work with a teacher or counselor at school to reach the best conclusion possible for your child if any incident of bullying occurs
  • If the bullying is happening online then take screenshots of the messages as evidence, report the content and tell your child to block the offending user accounts.

Every school should have measures in place to prevent bullying and at Ĵý-American Academy we think it is vital that children, parents and teaching staff are fully aware of our policy. We think it is important to tackle and highlight the issue of bullying on an ongoing basis and to establish an ethos within our school to hopefully ensure our students are never bullied at all.

However when this behavior does arise, Ĵý-AA will react promptly to support the bullied student and to ensure that the bullying stops and doesn’t happen again.

Ĵý-American Academy process to deal with bullying

  • Student, parent and teacher to follow the Ĵý-AA Student Support Services Referral Process for reporting bullying. There is a Student Open Mic that students can utilize to report concerns about bullying.
  • Implement the protective measures to ensure the safety of the reporting student
  • All cases must be recorded by the relevant teaching staff on PowerSchool
  • In the case of serious bullying the Student Services Department will be informed immediately, and parents will be informed and called in for a meeting to discuss the problem
  • All bullying behavior or threats of bullying will be investigated promptly and measures will be taken to stop the bullying
  • Action will be taken to help the bully (bullies) change their behavior
  • Counseling and other means of support will be offered to those who have been bullied

The school has a range of measures to use in our response to a bullying or harassment incident. These can include, but are not limited to: counseling, parental involvement and permanent expulsion from the school.

Anxiety is a common human condition and just like most adults, any child can feel worried or anxious at certain times in their lives. For example, examinations are an expected cause of anxiety in children and it is completely natural for a student to feel anxious about facing situations that are more demanding than day to day life.

However if your child is experiencing high levels of anxiety, and their general daily well being is being affected, Ĵý-American Academy can help you manage and support their concerns and feelings. Our school’s goal is to create a positive, caring, and engaging environment, and we have implemented specific programs to help both you and your child deal with issues like anxiety and stress.

Ĵý-American Academy programs to help manage and support anxiety

Positive Emotions

During November 2020, we organized a Positive Emotions campaign where our students were encouraged to talk about emotions in Advisories and Assemblies. This Ĵý-AA initiative has helped the children in our care to understand that all emotions, from the sad and angry negative emotions to positive emotions like happiness or excitement, are simply natural feelings. The task was then for us to highlight what the benefits are of concentrating on the positive emotions, and how this will help them achieve more at school and in their home life.

“Positive emotions can undo the harm caused by negative emotions and help children to feel connected to others, have more energy, increase awareness and be more mindful.”

Ms. Diane Sisson – Middle School Counselor & Designated Safeguarding Lead

More information on Positive Emotions available.

Counselor’s Corner

The Ĵý-AAfeatures a regular section called Counselor’s Corner that offers guidance on issues that might be a cause of stress and anxiety for your child at school. Subjects recently covered include our Positive Emotions initiative and how to embark on life at High School.

Be Well Newsletter

Theis an online newsletter published every month that focuses on subjects related to the well-being of our students. Each month the publication covers a mix of news articles on school events and programs, and helpful external reports and videos that offer great advice. It’s helpful but it’s also a lot of fun!

What you as a parent can do:

  • Be aware of the warning signs for anxiety in your child
  • Speak calmly with your child about how they are feeling
  • Contact Ĵý-American Academy to speak to one of our counselors or teachers for advice
  • Don’t be afraid to seek professional help outside of school
  • Be supportive, be by your child’s side and engage them in fun activities

What are the signs of anxiety?

Your child is likely to be suffering from anxiety if they are experiencing a number of the following issues:

  • Irritability
  • Insufficient sleep
  • Bed wetting & bad dreams
  • Excessive anger
  • A lack of confidence
  • Poor concentration
  • Constant negative thinking
  • An inability to face normal social situations and friends
  • Unwillingness to go to school

How you can support your child

  • encourage them to share their feelings
  • ensure they take exercise and eat a healthy diet
  • tell them it’s ok to be sad and cry

And finally…

By caring about mental health you will become an important part of erasing the stigma attached to mental health issues in our community. Every child deserves to have a happy and healthy life, and together, we can make this happen.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” — Martin Luther King

Supporting your child’s learning

There are many ways that you can support your child’s learning via the Ĵý-AA staff, campus and resources, and also while you are at home. The following are a few suggestions that will help:

Meet your teacher!

Make sure you meet your child’s teacher – this is the most important step you can take. Their core subject teachers will always have the clearest understanding of your child’s learning and you can contact them for progress reports throughout each school year.

Investigate Ĵý-American Academy!

Make sure you learn everything you can about this school and our staff so that you know what resources you can access and who it is best to talk to about every aspect of your child’s learning and well-being.

Attend school events

Turn up for as much as you can! The more Parent Seminars, PTA and social events you attend the more you will benefit from Ĵý-AA and what we have to offer.

Be encouraging at home

Spend time with your child at home encouraging them to be interested in their education and how it will benefit them in the long term. Be enthusiastic about learning new subjects and instill a curiosity in them to discover more about the world around them. Create a positive energy around learning.

Read, read and more reading

Reading is a pleasure and one of the key factors to a good education. Try to develop a love of reading of all book genres in your children, it will benefit their time at school and throughout their whole lives.

Helping with homework

Set up a schedule for homework that will help your child concentrate on their studies – make sure they have a quiet and comfortable environment to work in, and that they are not distracted by TV, games or siblings.

There is an extensive list of reasons why routine should be introduced into every child’s life, both at home and during their school day. A clear and flexible routine provides children with a reassuring timetable that will make them feel secure, and a solid framework that effectively reduces stress and helps keep them calm. A good routine can be an important part of your child’s general well being.

Keeping to a good routine doesn’t have to be tedious for either you or your child, far from it. Yes a daily routine might contain some boring elements, but a well organized timetable will help create a happy balance between the fun and seemingly more arduous activities. Children are happier to settle down and concentrate on a work task when they know the reward of playtime or lunch will follow on from study time.

Regular routines really help kids ‘get things done’, as a familiar schedule will establish expectations of a child. When the child is aware of how to meet the expectations they gain an independence which leads to confidence and the ability to deal with the small demands of daily life.

As a child’s self-assurance grows so will their ability to be able to cope with bigger and more complicated tasks and also changes that might occur in their life.

The benefits that your child will gain from following a sound routine at home and at school are extensive and it’s remarkable what a simple but flexible structure to each day can bring to a young person’s life.

A good routine will:

  • provide stability and security
  • reduce stress and keep a child calm
  • install good habits e.g regular teeth brushing and completing homework on time
  • encourage self-discipline to help a child study
  • aid with sleep and healthy eating patterns
  • establish expectations, create independence and build confidence

Parents, you don’t have to wait for exams to appear on the horizon to create a great study space for your children. A secluded and calming corner can be created in any home to help a child concentrate on homework, revision or even craftwork and other play activities.

However important examinations require a strong focus from any student and setting up the best study area possible will really help your child to complete coursework and to revise.

The following are some helpful tips for creating the perfect study space in your home:

Choosing a good spot

Even in a small apartment there will always be a good place to set up a desk; a position in front of a bedroom window can be calming and help a child focus, but so can a snug corner in a kitchen. Be inventive: even cupboard space can be turned into the perfect study room: set the lowest shelf at the perfect height for a desk and use the rest for books and utensils.

Make sure your child is comfortable

Everyone needs to be sitting comfortably when they are working, and students are no exception, especially when they are revising for hours at a time. Your child needs a comfortable chair that keeps their back straight and a computer screen set at the right eye level, to avoid back ache.

Good lighting is important

Along with avoiding aches and pains to a small body, it’s also important not to put any additional strain on your child’s eyes. Therefore, it is essential that their learning space is well lit, either by natural light or with well positioned artificial lighting ideally fitted with traditional incandescent bulbs, LED or halogen bulbs.

A study area can be nice!

Think about how to make the desk or study area as nice as it possibly can be. You can add little touches that are personal to your little one, such as introducing their favorite colors where possible, putting up a fun or inspiring poster, and buying useful but decorative pen holders and files.

When study space is in a shared bedroom

When children are sharing one bedroom then set clear guidelines as to when which areas are designated for study and play! If the study desk is in the bedroom then make sure non revising kids are consigned to the living area, kitchen or garden!

Set up a mobile station

Make sure phones are left in a designated spot before a child heads off to study, this will reduce the temptation of checking for messages during a concentrated revision session.

Avoid mess, get organized

Teach your child to keep their study area as tidy as possible and to organize their notebooks, pens and devices every day to ensure they are clutter free and ready to start work with a clear desk. Make sure they have shelves, draws or useful boxes where they can store everything they need to work with are always close to hand.

Distractions: sounds & siblings

Minimizing all possible distractions during study time is one of the most helpful things you can do for any of your children. Make sure noisy siblings don’t play loud music or issue invitations to play a favorite video game, that the television is turned off if it’s in the same room, and the dog is not barking at the neighbors.
